About scales

A scale is a set of notes spaced by a fixed pattern of intervals. The same pattern starting on a different root gives a different key. This tool covers the major scale, the three minor scales, all seven modes, the major and minor pentatonics, and the blues scale.

How to use it

  • Choose a root note and a scale type — the notes appear and highlight on the keyboard.
  • The root is shown in solid black; other scale tones are tinted.
  • Press Play scale to hear it ascend, or click individual keys.
